Optical Footprint 2021, Germany, Weimar

Immersive experience in negative after-images

Optical Footprint is a light installation which aims to create a new artistic representation and visual experience for the after-image. It allows visitors to acquire and experience this visual phenomenon by simulating the effect. The installation itself is used for representing three approaches of the after-image, a reflection of a visual object, a medium between eye and object and the existence of the visual image. The lighting stimulates the visual experience, by utilising lighting and projection mapping as the narrative equipment of the installation. The animation projection represents the after-images that we see inside ourselves (internal image) and the lighting fixture represents the real images that we see outside (external image).

The light installation is placed in a closed dark space with specific arrangements and positions. It consists of five separate pieces, which are a lighting fixture, two multiple layers of projection screens and two projectors with stands. They are arranged symmetrically inside the room. The lighting fixture is hung centrally between two projection screens; in front of the projection screens are the projectors, facing in the middle of the screen. The frontal part of the installation is where the projectors are placed; the backside is where the sphere light fixture is hung. The projection screen is a three-layer of mesh textile, which is arranged horizontally in parallel, generating also holographic effect with the projection. The sphere light fixture is a representative of a publicly visible object. In accordance with projection images, they are the imagery of after-image.
